When the Storm Reveals My Faith

Working on this week’s lesson really got me thinking about my own reactions to what’s going on around me—how closely they mirror the reactions of the disciples in Matthew 8:23–27.
They were with Jesus day in and day out.
They witnessed His power.
They saw the miracles.
And yet, when the storm came… they panicked.
I’ve walked through many storms in my life, and if I’m being honest, there have been far too many times when I’ve done the same. I’ve panicked. I’ve let fear take over.
And in that place of panic, the enemy finds an opening.
He begins to plant thoughts—subtle at first, but powerful enough to challenge my faith. Thoughts that question God’s goodness, His presence, His promises. It’s not random; it’s intentional. A slow and steady attempt to pull me away from Christ and the calling He has placed on my life.
But just like He did with the disciples, Jesus meets me there.
He corrects.
He redirects.
He calls me back.
“Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26)
Not in condemnation—but in love. In truth.
He reminds me of something I so easily forget:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
When I return to Him—when I choose to trust instead of fear—something shifts. Peace begins to rise. Not because the storm immediately stops, but because my focus changes.
I stop looking at the storm…
and I start looking at Him.
He becomes my calm.
Jesus didn’t just calm the storm around the disciples—He revealed that He had authority over it all. And He still does.
He is able to calm the winds and the waves in our lives, but sometimes what He’s really after is calming our hearts in the middle of it.
He is calling us to remain focused on Him.
To stay grounded in His presence.
To trust Him, even when everything around us feels uncertain.
And when we do—when we choose faith over fear—we begin to experience a peace that doesn’t make sense to the world.
A calm in the middle of chaos.
If we will simply remain faithful, He will carry us through every storm.
